How compression works
Each image is sized to the resolution it needs where it appears on the page and re-encoded with MozJPEG. Near-greyscale images are stored as true greyscale, eligible photos are repacked into optimised progressive JPEGs, duplicates are stored once, and leftover editing data is removed.

Add text anywhere, or replace existing text. The original words under a cover are removed from the file, not just hidden. Move and resize each edit, then save a new PDF.

Text under a cover is taken out of the PDF itself, so it can’t be selected, searched or copied afterwards; Pare checks this after saving. Pictures and drawn shapes under a cover are hidden but stay in the file. Replacement text doesn’t reflow the paragraph, and works best on a plain background. Any character is supported, including ≥, µ, Greek letters and superscripts. Saving changes invalidates existing digital signatures.

Recent
Pare remembers where you were in each PDF. Recent files are stored only in this browser on this device, and you can forget them at any time. Read aloud uses your device’s own voices and works offline; on iPhone, the Enhanced and Premium voices in Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content sound best. Phone mode trims margins and splits two-column pages into single columns; text in Phone mode is shown as a picture, so switch back to normal view to select or copy text.

Starting
Check each receipt, especially photos, and correct anything by tapping it. Orange notes need a look; grey notes are for information.
PDF receipts and invoices are read directly. Photos and scanned PDFs are read with text recognition on your device; the first time, this downloads about 7 MB, then works offline. Clear, flat, well-lit photos read best. GST is checked against 1/11 of the total and ABNs against their check digit. The spreadsheet opens in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets. Always check the figures before using them for tax.

Text, headings, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, pictures, headers and footers, page numbers and page breaks are supported, and web links stay clickable. Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New are replaced with fonts of identical letter widths, so lines break as in Word; other fonts use a close substitute. Complex layouts (text boxes wrapped around pictures, SmartArt, equations, charts) may not be exact, and older .doc files need saving as .docx first.

Your file never leaves this device. Pages are drawn at the size you choose. Slides are stored as palette PNGs, the same technique as pngquant in ImageOptim, but only when every part of the page passes a strict quality check; pages with photos become high-quality JPEGs. Choose Lossless when every pixel must match exactly.
